Bodegas Matsu, 'El Viejo', Toro 750ml

Aged 110 years on average, the incredible vines that create 'The Old One' from the Matsu range were planted before the Easter Rising and the first World War - truly remarkable. Matsu translates to 'wait' in Japanese and, with yields of older vines being lower but the fruit more complex, it was well worth the wait. With abundant high-altitude, sandy soil vineyards which foiled the Phylloxera bug and perfect climate, Matsu found themselves in the presence of many pre-phylloxera and centenary vineyards. The vines were cultivated following an ethos of ancestral viticulture, with hand-picked Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grapes aged 16 months in new French oak barrels. This powerful and structured wine has a dense richness, boasting dark cherry, bramble and vanilla aromas plus lavender and violet hues. The finish is long, dry and cocoa-like, lifting to red berries and coulis-like texture

Apart from the sensational characters that it possesses right now, it will age for many years to come. It truly is history in a bottle.
